Well, whatever bug it was, it has hit us hard. We arrived June 1st in Bonaire after a 3 day sailing trip from Martinique. June 2nd I got the fever. My Captain joined me in my misery on June 4th. It was only around June 15th that we were both finally well enough to get bored on board.

Quarantine was lifted on June 16th and we were allowed to leave the boat on June 17th to report to customs & immigration. After 20 days of nothing else but O2 and each other …. and you guys! Thank you very much for all of the communication and virtual support. We are ON an Island, which is clearly different from BEING an Island.

So once the green light was given a Free Willy sensation ran through our veins and off we dashed ! But the 3 km return trip along a most gorgeous Caribbean shore (the hues of blue , the fish !) into the Center of Kralendijk left us completely exhausted. And Willy ‘s dorsal fin flopped down again. Meaning that we are cured alright but still a bit weak in the knees.

A good thing you don’t need much muscle to float! We are happy to confirm that our dinghy snorkeling trips are successfully resetting our system. We are alive and kicking again ….. thanks to our snorkel fins and thanks to the good people of Harbour Village Marina.

Although it is a perfect small scale marina -which is a thing right up our alley- we did choose to be put on the waiting list for a mooring so that we can lower the costs. (We will stick to the ABC islands for at least 3 months, what with the rest of the region which was on our wish list being in shatters. ) But in the meantime we are very much enjoying the vibe, the comfort of water & electricity galore and the solidarity of the international sailing community.

A limited number of ships – 2 per week are allowed in until all 60 berths are taken- are arriving from all over the Caribbean fleeing hurricane threats and Covid 19. Boats that carry names like Pearl, Exit Strategy, Ventura and Hope. O2 fits right in.

And the moment our knees can be fully relied upon again, we will try and find out what’s up with the Dutch here in Bonaire. To be continued….
